AGAIN THIS YEAR, Lexpert is pleased to join with Deloitte, Thomson Reuters Financial & Risk and The Globe and Mail to celebrate the Canadian Dealmakers Awards. The Winners at this event are your clients, Canadian companies engaging in M&A activities at home and around the world. You will know as well as they do that these activities were set in challenging circumstances. These challenges may have included differing cross-border securities regulations, currency devaluations and sector contractions. Navigating through those and other challenges required leadership, which your clients clearly provided. Their lawyers informed those leaders and advocated for them. You were also encouraged by their bold moves. Positivity is exciting and fulfilling to be amidst ... and it also begets a self-fulfilling prophecy. Business people and their lawyers who see opportunities where others see gloom indeed attract opportunities. As the saying credited to Henry Ford goes, “Whether you can or can’t, you’re right.”

Among the many lawyers who supported Canadian Dealmakers Awards Winners, are three lawyers depicted in our cover photo. They are: Mark Rasile of Bennett Jones LLP, who advised Stantec Inc. on its acquisition of MWH Global Inc.; Robin Upshall of Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP, who advised Fortis Inc. on its acquisition of ITC Holdings Corp.; and John Macfarlane of Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, who advised Emera Inc. on its acquisition of TECO Energy Inc.
