Sale of Marathon Pulp Mill

Fort James Corp. (Fort James), the US parent company of Fort James-Marathon, Ltd., has recently sold the Marathon Pulp Mill for $100 million to a joint venture made up of Tembec Industries Inc. and Kruger Inc. Although the sale sees the end of Fort James’ active involvement with the pulp industry in Canada, Fort James will retain its consumer products businesses (including Dixie Cup).

Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP acted for Fort James on the sale with a team led by Ian MacGregor and Jodi Katz. They were assisted by a number of their Toronto colleagues including Paul R. King (real estate), Rosalind Cooper (environmental), Lori A. McMillan (tax), Duane Schippers (competition), Lena Crawford (intellectual property) and Liz Swift (corporate work). The joint venture group was represented by Jeffrey M. Blidner, Marvin Singer, Sharon S. Landsman, John Hermann and Walter C. Lehman of Goodman and Carr.
