Robert Kopstein is a partner who practises in the areas of Canadian, US, domestic and international tax at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP with emphasis on Canada-US cross-border transactions. Has extensive experience in corporate finance, structured finance, tax disputes and mergers & acquisitions involving public and private companies and governmental agencies. Authored and presented numerous papers on a variety of topics at various professional organizations, including the CTF, TEI, CPTS, CRA, CBA and ABA. Canadian editor for BNA International Tax Guide. Canadian contributor to the book, Tax Planning For International Mergers, Acquisitions, Joint Ventures and Restructurings (Wolters Kluwer). Contributed to a United Nations study on tax treaties between developed and developing countries. Was the principal consultant to the Province of BC regarding drafting of certain amendments to the Company Act, relating to unlimited liability companies. Was the lead counsel of a successful appeal of a GAAR assessment in the Tax Court of Canada and the Federal Court of Appeal. Senior tax partner in Calgary and Vancouver offices.
