Emily Chan practises in the overlapping areas of energy, environmental, and Indigenous law. She regularly advises clients on proceedings before federal and provincial regulatory tribunals, including the Canada Energy Regulator, BC Utilities Commission, BC Oil and Gas Commission, and BC Environmental Assessment Office. She has recently been recognized by Chambers Canada, as a ranked lawyer in the area of energy – provincial regulatory (BC). On environmental matters, she provides advice on environmental risks and liabilities in mergers and acquisitions and financings, environmental and impact assessments, approval and permitting of major natural resource and infrastructure projects, and regulatory compliance. Her work also includes advice on contaminated sites, fish and wildlife issues, water law, emergency planning and spill response, and climate change. She is a contributing editor to several environmental law publications and is an executive member and former chairwoman of the CBA-BC environmental law subsection. She also provides legal and strategic advice to clients on Indigenous rights and title issues, consultation, participation in regulatory processes, and the negotiation of agreements, including impact-benefit agreements.
