Robert Winogron is a partner in the Ottawa office of Gowling WLG, and is well-known in Canada for his work in Aboriginal law. He has more than 20 years experience in all aspects of Aboriginal claims. With the Federal Department of Justice, he was lead counsel before the Indian Claims Commission, coordinated the Department’s highest profile litigation files including tax and commercial, Aboriginal Rights and Title, Treaty and other matters. He was team lead for the specific claims negotiation lawyers group. In addition, he was Canada's legal representative on the Assembly of First Nations/Canada Joint Task Force, which created the Specific Claims Tribunal. After joining Gowling WLG, he was appointed to the Assembly of First Nations Expert Panel on Specific Claims which recently released a report and recommendations on specific claims. He advises First Nations on all aspects of specific claims, including research, preparation, submission, negotiations with federal and provincial governments, conducting claims before the courts and the Specific Claims Tribunal as well as post settlement issues and strategies.
