Jeff Coles is a partner in Gowling WLG's Calgary office. A lawyer as well as a registered Canadian and US patent agent, he also has an advanced degree in medical sciences. His practice focuses on intellectual property matters involving a variety of innovation-intensive industries such as life sciences (pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, medical devices, and biotechnology generally), agrotechnology, cleantech, oil and gas, environmental technologies, and energy. His practice involves patent drafting and prosecution, including providing strategic advice on intellectual property portfolio and risk management, specifically assisting companies by coordinating intellectual property, regulatory, and commercial strategies. He has acted on behalf of clients whose activities span the globe, including entrepreneurs, start-ups, early-stage ventures, universities, government organizations, SMEs, and multinational corporations. His research experience includes post-graduate studies at the University of Alberta and work at the chemical biological defence section of the Canadian Department of National Defence.
