Manulife Financial Corporation completed an offering of common shares on November 30, 2009, raising a total of $2.5 billion. The common shares were offered through a syndicate of underwriters by way of a “bought deal” led by Scotia Capital Inc. and RBC Capital Markets Inc.
Manulife Financial Corporation was represented in-house by Jean-Paul (J-P.) Bisnaire, senior executive vice president, business development and general counsel and David Kerr, assistant vice president, senior counsel and assistant corporate secretary; in Canada by Torys LLP with a team consisting of Sharon Geraghty, David Seville and Jon Reay (securities); Blair Keefe (insurance regulatory); and James Welkoff and Catrina Card (tax); and in the United States by Debevoise & Plimpton LLP with a team consisting of Alan Paley and Anne Meyer.
The underwriters were represented by McCarthy Tétrault LLP with a team consisting of Barry Ryan, Andrew Parker and Matthew Appleby (business law) and Jerald Wortsman and Gabrielle Richards (tax).
