MDS Capital Corp., a life sciences-focused private equity firm, established MDS Life Sciences Technology Fund II on August 26, 2002. The fund is focused on making investments in emerging healthcare and life sciences companies in North America. Canada Pension Plan Investment Board committed $100 million to the fund and an additional $100 million to a separate co-investment vehicle. The board also acquired a 10 per cent ownership position in MDS Capital.
The MDS Capital legal team was directed by Gregory Gubitz, senior vice-president and corporate secretary; and Graysanne Bedell, director, legal affairs; assisted by Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP with a team that included Richard Steinberg, Tracy Hooey and Aaron Atkinson (corporate) and Douglas Cannon and Patrick McCay (tax). The board’s team was directed by Jane Beatty, vice-president and general counsel, and included David Matlow, Chantal Thibault and Dennis Lopes (corporate) and Carrie Smit (tax) of Goodmans LLP.
