Moffat Sells Competitive Access Provider Business

In April, 2000, Winnipeg-based Moffat Communications Limited (Moffat), which provides broadcast and specialty television, cable and Internet services in Alberta, Manitoba and the US, sold its competitive access provider business to GT Group Telecom Inc., for $118 million, comprising of cash and Group Telecom shares. Group Telecom is a competitive local exchange carrier based in Toronto, which offers high speed data, Internet applications and voice services to Canadian businesses over its fibre-optic network.

Shawn Hughes, Moffat General Counsel, instructed Bennett Jones on the deal, with a team of lawyers that included Douglas Foster, Bryan Haynes and Took Whiteley. Group Telecom General Counsel, Robert Fabes, instructed a team of lawyers from Goodman Phillips & Vineberg which included Paul Goldman, Douglas Bolton and Bruce Wright.
