Smart & Biggar announces new additions

Smart & Biggar has appointed Lynn Ing as counsel. Ing, who practises in Toronto, has more than a decade of experience in patent prosecution and litigation

Smart & Biggar has appointed Lynn Ing as counsel. Ing, who practises in Toronto, has more than a decade of experience in patent prosecution and litigation. Ing held an integral role in the successful appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada in AstraZeneca v Apotex, 2017 SCC 36, leading to the abolishment of the “promise doctrine” of patent utility in Canada.

The firm announced Evan Nuttall is joining the firm as a partner and member of the intellectual property litigation practice group, in Calgary. Nuttall is an experienced litigator sought after for complex intellectual property matters by some of the leading players in the energy, oil and manufacturing sectors. His practice is focused exclusively on complex litigation matters including infringement actions relating to patents, licensing, trademarks, copyright and industrial designs.

The firm also announced it has added Patrick Roszell to the partnership. Roszell, the patent agent and lawyer, focuses on patent prosecution and IP strategy, including drafting and prosecuting patent applications, providing patentability, infringement and freedom to operate opinions, and advising on IP-related agreements. He practises in Toronto.

Smart & Biggar announced patent agent Lei Liu has been promoted to partner. Among Liu’s clients are  pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, green technology companies, research institutions, and universities. Liu practises in Ottawa.

The firm announced trademark lawyer and litigator Graham Hood has been made partner. Hood represents brand owners focused on building and protecting their brands and reputations. He advises clients on effective strategies to manage and monetize trademark portfolios. He is one of the firm’s leading experts in anti-counterfeiting and practises in Toronto.
