The Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, recently announced the construction of a new Montreal office, a 600,000 square foot building that will be erected in the heart of the International District of Montreal. The building will accommodate more than 1,200 people and is scheduled for occupancy in the fall of 2002. Construction of the building will cost an estimated $102.5 million.
The new building, which will be in the shape of a reverse “L”, will be a daring piece of architecture featuring technological and bioclimatic innovations. The base of the “L” will consist of 13 storeys, while the extended portion will have 10. The building will take the form of a bridge linking two islands on either side of Saint-Alexandre, the street that runs through the middle of the site.
The building will have several facades, with one facing the new public square west of the Convention Centre and two others on Viger and Victoria Square. The design will be user-friendly and environmentally responsive, and the building will include quality common services, such as a day-care centre, a fitness club and restaurants. An underground parking lot for more than 1,200 vehicles is already under construction and will serve the future office of the Caisse and the Convention Centre, among others.
