Stephen Beney is a partner with Bereskin & Parr LLP and head of the Medical Devices practice Group. He assesses IP needs and helps to secure patents, including for start-ups, small- to mid-sized enterprises, major multinational companies and university researchers. In addition to medical devices, he has obtained patents for clients in a variety of fields, including automotive, imaging, electronics, communications, fuel cells, solar, computers, AI and blockchain. He advises on IP management and strategy, has prepared many patentability opinions, infringement and validity opinions, and is experienced in preparing and prosecuting industrial design applications. In 2016, he was elected President of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC) at its 90th Annual Meeting. He is a member of IPIC’s Patent Legislation, Patent Practice and Professional Regulation committees and served as member of the Canadian Patent Agents Examining Board. Due to his expertise, he was invited by the Canadian Intellectual Property Office to participate in the government’s Modernizing the IP Community Initiative. He has authored many articles on patent law and is a frequent speaker on the subject.
