Brian Smeenk is a partner in Fasken’s Labour, Employment & Human Rights Group. He advises both private and public sector employers. He appears before all levels of courts and administrative tribunals, including arbitration, labour relations & human rights tribunals, judicial reviews and appeal courts. Brian has been counsel in many leading reported decisions and he has extensive experience in collective bargaining and mediation. He has acted as Chief Negotiator for large private and public sector concerns, including York University in its bargaining with its support staff unions since 2008. Brian is past president of the Toronto Human Resource Professionals’ Association and the Toronto Area Industrial Relations Association and past chair of the Education Law Section of the Ontario Bar Association. Brian is the founder and co-editor of Fasken's weekly bulletin, HR Space. Brian is consistently recognized as one of Canada’s leading labour lawyers in top legal publications. Brian was named Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary Foundation (2014) and inducted into the College of Labor & Employment Lawyers in 2015. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1981.
