Denis Blanchette has extensive experience in public law, with a focus on First Nations governance and capacity building, the administration of justice, and environmental law. He works with Indigenous people in Québec on a wide range of matters, particularly the implementation of all major agreements involving the Crees of Eeyou Istchee, including the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement (1975), the Paix des Braves (2002), the Agreement concerning a New Relationship between the Government of Canada and the Crees of Eeyou Istchee (2008), the Eeyou Marine Region Land Claims Agreement (2010), the Agreement on Governance in the Eeyou Istchee James Bay Territory (2012) and the Agreement on Cree Nation Governance between the Crees of Eeyou Istchee and the Government of Canada (2017). Denis advises on various initiatives concerning federal and provincial legislative reforms, government relations affecting Indigenous people and related government policy. Before joining Gowling WLG, Denis was a law clerk to Justice Peter Cory at the Supreme Court of Canada and he was involved with international organizations in Africa and Latin America where he participated in the implementation and management of projects involving institutional reform, justice and the protection of human rights.
