Don is a partner in the corporate department and a member of the firm’s Oil and Gas Practice Group and its China Practice Group. He has over 40 years of experience, in Canada and internationally, in asset and share sales and acquisitions, LNG and oil sands development, production sharing contracts, production and facilities construction and operating matters, production sale contracts, financings, joint ventures, limited partnerships, and farmouts. He is also a member of the firm's Competition, Antitrust & Foreign Investment Practice Group, with considerable experience in Investment Canada Act matters. He has contributed to several Canadian Energy Law Foundation and Association of International Petroleum Negotiators seminars and has taught courses for Insight, the Conference Board, the University of Calgary, Mount Royal University, and the Canadian Association of Petroleum Landmen. Don has been recognized as one of Canada’s leading energy lawyers by Lexpert®, Chambers Global: The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business, as well as other publications for several years running. He was called to the Alberta Bar in 1979.

On October 18, 2017, Schlumberger Production Management (SPM), along with Torxen Energy, entered into a definitive agreement for the purchase of the Palliser Block assets located in Alberta from Cenovus Energy Inc., an integrated Canadian oil company, for cash consideration of $1.3 billion. The deal closed on December 7, 2017.
On May 31, 2017, Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. (Canadian Natural) completed two previously announced agreements to acquire oil sands assets from Shell Canada Energy, Shell Canada Ltd. and Shell Canada Resources (Shell) and, with a subsidiary of Shell, to jointly acquire Marathon Oil Canada Corp. (MOCC).
On April 20, 2016, Paramount Resources (Paramount) completed the sale of sour gas processing assets in north western Alberta to Pembina Gas Services Limited Partnership, an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Pembina Pipeline Corporation (Pembina) for cash and other considerations.
