John’s commercial litigation practice involves contract disputes, shareholder remedies, fiduciary obligations, insolvency and class actions. He has significant experience in the financial services, real estate and auto parts industries and has also represented National Hockey League clubs in player salary arbitrations. Many of his cases involve the need to organize complex financial, technical or scientific facts so that they can be properly understood by the court or by an arbitration panel. He is comfortable working with clients to create and monitor litigation budgets and in using technology to minimize litigation costs where possible. John has written many articles on topics encountered in complex commercial litigation published in leading Canadian law journals.
On January 10, 2019, a consortium consisting of Air Canada, Toronto-Dominion Bank (“TD”), Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (“CIBC”) and Visa Canada Corp. (“Visa”) announced the successful closing of its purchase of Aimia Canada Inc., owner and operator of the Aeroplan Loyalty Business, from Aimia Inc.
On April 28, 2017, Maxwell Technologies, Inc. (Maxwell) (NASDAQ: MXWL), a leading developer and manufacturer of capacitive energy storage and power delivery solutions, completed its acquisition of substantially all of the assets and business, including the operating entities, of Nesscap Energy Inc. (Nesscap) (TSXV: NCE) pursuant to a court approved arrangement under the Business Corporations Act (Ontario) (the Arrangement).
