John Porter has extensive experience as both litigation and insolvency counsel in complex, multi-jurisdictional disputes, and has worked closely with clients and other counsel in a variety of Canadian provinces and the United States. Mr. Porter’s areas of expertise include complex commercial disputes, insolvency and restructuring proceedings, financial services, professional negligence, class actions, and oppression proceedings. He has appeared at all levels of the Ontario Courts and before the Federal Court and the Supreme Court of Canada. Significant mandates include acting as litigation counsel to the Government of Yukon in connection with the insolvency of Yukon Zinc Corporation, court-appointed counsel representing policy holders in the demutualization of Economical Mutual Insurance Company, counsel to Coopers & Lybrand in connection with its CCAA proceedings, including the successful defence of claims against Coopers with a value of approximately $400M, acting on behalf of a committee of contesting bondholders in the BCE privatization, acting as counsel to the Federal Government in relation to numerous mining insolvencies, and acting as litigation counsel to seven Canadian airport authorities on a successful appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada.
