Laura B. Stewart is a partner in the Medical Defence Group in the Ottawa office of Gowling WLG. She has degrees in chemistry and law from Dalhousie University as well as a diploma in piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music. Laura practises exclusively in the area of medical defence, splitting her practice between civil ligation before all levels of the Ontario courts and various regulatory and administrative tribunals, including Discipline Committees, Fitness to Practice Committees, the Consent and Capacity Board the Health Professions Appeal and Review Board, credentialing committees, hospital boards and inquests. Ms. Stewart has a particular interest in mental health law. She is actively involved in advocacy and legal education, speaking frequently on issues of substantive law and advocacy techniques. She served on the Board of Directors of The Advocates’ Society from 2010 to 2013. In 2016, Laura received The Advocates' Society Award for Excellence in Teaching. She has been recognized in The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory and received the Best Lawyers 2019 Medical Negligence "Lawyer of the Year" award in Ottawa. In 2022, Laura was recognized by Best Lawyers as the Administrative and Public Law “Lawyer of the Year” award winner in Ottawa.
