Mark Bantey is a partner in Gowling WLG’s Montréal office practising media law, privacy law, civil and commercial litigation, and administrative and constitutional law. Having acted for both national and local press, Mark has extensive experience in pre-publication review, libel law, access to information law, freedom of the press issues such as publication bans and protection of journalistic sources, constitutional law, and human rights. Mark also has a wealth of experience with respect to the right to privacy, advising clients on their rights and obligations and defending claims for breach of privacy. As a litigator in media law and commercial law, he acts before all levels of courts, including the SCC. Mark has lectured in media law at Concordia University at the bachelor’s and master's levels. He is frequently called upon to give seminars on both the theoretical aspects of media law and practical difficulties facing journalists. Mark has been recognized as a leading practitioner in defamation and media law by The Best Lawyers in Canada since its inception and has appeared consistently in The Canadian Legal Lexpert® Directory. In 2018 and again in 2020, Mark was recognized by Best Lawyers in Canada as Lawyer of the Year for Defamation and Media Law – Montréal.
