Michael Garellek is a partner in Gowling WLG’s Montréal office and co-leader of the Financial Services Regulatory Group. He has extensive experience assisting Canadian and foreign banks, insurance companies, trust companies, and other regulated financial institutions as well as a number of Fintech companies, MSBs, and other service providers in respect of financial regulatory and compliance questions in Canada, including AML. In the areas of insurance and securities, Michael advises clients on the application of the law and regulations in Québec and in dealing with regulators, namely the Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF) and the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions. In the area of litigation, Michael represents clients subject to examination, investigation, and sometimes prosecution by the AMF, the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC), and other regulatory authorities. Michael lectures at the University of Montréal on corporate and securities litigation and in preparing for case competitions. He is co-author of Jurisclasseur en valeurs mobilières (LexisNexis Canada). A CPA, Michael was previously an inspector with the AMF and an auditor with the Office of the Auditor General of Canada. In 2019 and 2020, he was named an Acritas Star.
