Looking for Leadership

Of all of the “top” lists to circulate on LinkedIn and elsewhere, surely there is nothing more popular than lists of leadership traits. These lists tend to describe qualities of leadership, or what leadership looks like. Less frequent are lists setting out the many situations that are calling out for leadership.

I was struck to learn from the coverage of the late criminal lawyer Edward Greenspan’s career, that he took a temporary leave from his practice to embark on a national speaking tour advocating his position on capital punishment (against). While this example may or may not inspire you, there are any number of Bar organizations, charities and community groups that would benefit from having lawyers on their leadership teams.

So too would law firms. Committees and initiatives of all kinds, including compensation, diversity, student education and client service, need help.

It is the leaders serving in these various capacities who will be planning the future of organizations and law firms. Indeed, they may end up planning significant organizational change. When change is inevitable, it is a very exciting time to be a leader.
