Tanzanian Serengeti

If you’ve ever sat across from the loser in an arbitration, you know what it feels like to stand in front of a charging lion. But even that experience won’t prepare you for quality time in the wild. These spots won’t disappoint.

The Serengeti (Tanzania) – From lions and giraffe to wild boar and turtles, animal sightings abound in this African hotspot.
When: Every year in October/November, the wildebeest migrate across the Masai Mara and down into Tanzania. Book early at spots like the Four Seasons for the most luxurious stays. fourseasons.com/Serengeti
Don’t miss: The Ngorongoro crater. The UNESCO World Heritage site (1978) is the largest intact caldera in the world — 19 kilometres in diameter with 400- to 600-metre high walls! Inside, a unique ecosystem and an area perfect for seeing not only wild game, but the flora and fauna of the region.

Rwanda – There’s nowhere else where you can stand this close to a gorilla in the wild. Step into the living room of the late Dian Fossey’s favourite creatures. More than 20 families of gorillas abound including the impressive Silverbacks.
When: June through September offers cooler weather and will mean less mud to wade through as you hike the mountains.
Don’t miss: Virunga Lodge. Set high in the mountains, the lodge’s luxurious suites are perfect for taking in the scenery. Gourmet meals include a mix of local and international offerings. Sister properties in Uganda mean trips out to see chimpanzees are easy. volcanoessafaris.com

Galapagos Islands (Ecuador) – Like a trip to Darwin’s paradise (his research station is here), the islands are full of scientific wonder: blue-footed booby birds, pods of humpback whales and sea lions as far as the eye can see.
When: Until recently, visits required a ship stay or low-level accommodation. Those options still exist but now those who prefer pressed linens can come too. Try Pikaia Lodge or Royal Palm Hotel for high-star stays.
Don’t miss: Swimming offshore. Schools of sharks, frisky sea lions, shy turtles and more are happy to share the waters with you.
