Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP

Since the start of her career, Iris Fischer has worked on a diverse range of precedent-setting files, garnering a stellar reputation for high-stakes advocacy. Today, she is co-leader of Blakes Toronto Litigation & Dispute Resolution group and leader of the firm’s Media & Defamation practice.

Iris’ experience ranges from complex commercial disputes to white-collar crime, constitutional, competition, freedom of information/privacy and class action matters. She is widely recognized as a leading media/defamation expert, having been counsel on numerous successful cases that range from the watershed Grant v. Torstar decision (recognizing a new defence for responsible communication in the public interest), to cases changing the law on access to tribunal records and OHIP billing records, to the recent Supreme Court decision in Sherman Estate v. Donovan (on court openness and privacy). Iris frequently represents media on issues involving search warrants in high profile criminal cases, and regularly advises clients on evolving laws around social media, technology and online information.

Iris also specializes in representing multinational clients on government and internal investigations, including in fraud, anti-corruption and Competition Act matters, and in matters involving public-sector laws, such as conflict of interest, lobbying and election finance legislation.

Iris’ tactical and results-oriented approach to problem solving has clients calling on her for guidance during their most challenging times. As one client commented, “Iris’ skills belie her age and years of experience.... She has an exceptional ability to assess and war-game challenging situations in complex litigation and respond with clear, insightful and well-reasoned recommendations.”
