His practice as a lawyer and trademark agent focuses on the protection, commercialization and enforcement of legal rights in technology, intellectual property, new media and entertainment. He has been listed in The Best Lawyers in Canada in technology law continuously since 2006 and, more recently, he has been named by The Best Lawyers in Canada as “Technology Law Lawyer of the Year” for Calgary for 2017. James assists clients with a wide variety of technology and intellectual property related matters, including e-commerce, IT and software, the Internet, electronic records and e-discovery, privacy, records management, information governance, cyber-security, new media and content, publishing, film and video, as well as energy-related technologies and clean-tech, including experience with seismic data, digital oilfield, ethanol, wind and solar projects and related technologies. He has extensive experience in structuring and drafting complex transactions and agreements in his areas of practice. As an advocate, he has appeared before many tribunals, including the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal, the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta and the Trademark Opposition Board in cases related to patents, trademarks, copyright and other intellectual property rights.
