Yoon Kang is a principal in Smart & Biggar’s Toronto office and a leader in the firm’s life sciences litigation practice. For over 20 years, she has focused her practice on patent litigation and prosecution, counselling global pharmaceutical innovators and research institutions on all aspects of patent rights, including in small molecules and biologics inventions. She is experienced as lead counsel, representing pharmaceutical clients before the Federal Court and Federal Court of Appeal in complex patent litigation, including under the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations. In 2018, she was named Best Lawyer in Life Sciences in North America by Euromoney Legal Media Group at the Americas Women in Business Law Awards. In 2014, she was recognized as Canadian Patent Non-Contentious Attorney of the Year in LMG Life Sciences. She is listed as a top legal practitioner in Expert Guides: Women in Business Law, LMG Life Sciences, The Best Lawyers in Canada, and Benchmark Canada. She is a fellow of IPIC; member and former co-chairwoman of the CBA's patents and industrial design committee; holder of a BSc (microbiology and Genetics), MSc (molecular biology and medical genetics), and LLB; and registered patent and trademark agent. She was called to the Ontario bar in 1995.
