City of Edmonton Acquires Composting Facility

On June 30, 2001, the City of Edmonton completed the purchase of the Edmonton Composting Facility from TransAlta Energy Marketing (U.S.), Inc. for an aggregate price of approximately $97 million. The Edmonton Composting Facility is the largest composting facility in North America and went into commercial operation in November 2000.

Parlee McLaws served as outside counsel for the City with a team led by Ian MacLachlan, who was assisted by John McClure (tax) and Bill Wright (competition and commercial). The City was represented by in-house counsel Marta Sherk and was assisted by Ingrid Johnson (borrowing issues). McCarthy T├ętrault acted for TransAlta Energy Marketing with a team comprised of Lloyd Symons (commercial), Bruce L. MacPhail and Kieth Mullback (real estate).
