Enerkem Inc., a Québec-based company specialized in converting heterogeneous waste and biomass materials into a diverse range of clean fuels and circular chemicals using proprietary patented technology, completed a financial restructuring and recapitalization through proceedings under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA), emerging with a strengthened capital structure and renewed financial stability.
The court-supervised process delivered new financing, a committed leadership team, and a revitalized commercial strategy, with the company’s technology know-how intact. Following its emergence from the CCAA proceedings, Enerkem is positioned to advance its project pipeline in the sustainable methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) markets.
Enerkem is now able to lead its Ecoplanta project in Spain and to develop a strong project pipeline bringing sustainable methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to the market. Located in Tarragona, Ecoplanta, an €800 million investment from Repsol, will become the first plant in Europe to produce renewable and circular methanol from waste through Enerkem’s gasification technology, one of the world’s most advanced waste-valorization processes. The plant, scheduled to start up in 2029, will have the capacity to process up to 400,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste per year and convert it into 240,000 tonnes of renewable fuels and circular products.
