Specializing in construction law, Guy Gilain has considerable experience in litigation and in drafting contractual documents. His clients include owners, developers, general and specialized contractors and equipment suppliers. He represents national and multinational companies, and various construction industry associations. Mr. Gilain acts as chair of the Construction Group in Miller Thomson's Montréal office. He provides advice on issues regarding construction contracts, including negotiating, drafting, financing and handling claims, expense management or administrative management matters for all types of construction projects, including major civic works, commercial and industrial buildings, residential complexes and infrastructures. Mr. Gilain has represented clients resolving serious disputes by mediation or arbitration, and has occasionally acted as arbitrator and mediator. He acted for the Algerian Government, preparing the contract documents and negotiating with the general contractors for the construction of the Algerian East–West Highway, an $11.7-billion project. He also acted on behalf of a mining company in an international arbitration held in New York City. He has been repeatedly recognized by The Best Lawyers in Canada as a leader in construction law.
