D. Doak Horne, LLB, PEng practises in intellectual property with an emphasis on patent litigation and patent prosecution, infringement and impeachment actions. He has appeared as lead counsel before the Federal Trial Division and Court of Appeal, as well as the trial and appeal courts of Alberta and Ontario in regard to various intellectual property disputes including patent ownership, and in regard to a variety of technologies including seismic, telemetry, agricultural machinery and controls, brake linings, exercise equipment, and downhole tools. Doak is Registered Patent Agent and Trademark Agent before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, and before the USPTO for Canadian applicants filing patents and trademarks in the United States. Doak has been recognized in the Best Lawyers in Canada from 2006 to present, and was awarded the designation "Lawyer of the Year in IP Law" (Western Canada) by Best Lawyers in Canada (2014). Doak is based in Gowling WLG’s Calgary Office. Prior to his legal career Doak worked as a professional engineer in jet engine design. Doak is a member of the CBA, IPIC, the Law Society of Alberta, Law Society of Ontario, the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), and the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO).
