Matthew Sherrard is a partner in Gowling WLG's Business Law Group in Montréal, practising primarily in the areas of Indigenous law and governance. He provides strategic, practical advice on a variety of commercial matters, and also has particular expertise regarding governance, health and social services, justice, public security, as well as local and regional government. Matthew works closely with Indigenous clients on a variety of governance matters, including negotiations with provincial and federal governments, nation-to-nation agreements, financial administration, board governance, and legislative drafting. He helps his clients to navigate complex, changing legal landscapes to leverage their rights and achieve their objectives, and he has lectured on Indigenous law matters at the University of Windsor. Matthew has also advised extensively on renewable energy projects, including on environmental matters, power purchase and impact and benefit agreements. Matthew was called to the Bar in 2007 in Nova Scotia, and in 2008 in Québec and Ontario. He practises law in English and French, and speaks Spanish and some Arabic.
