A partner in Gowling WLG’s Toronto office, Brian Cohen is co-leader of the firm’s National Private Client Services Group and a member of the firm’s global Private Client Services Group. He assists clients in the areas of estate planning, trusts and personal taxation - in particular, advising high-net worth individuals on succession planning alternatives. He also advises donors, charitable entities, public and private foundations and not-for-profit organizations about the tax implications of formation, registration, governance and planned giving strategies. Brian also frequently advises on estate litigation matters. A frequent speaker, Brian has presented and prepared papers for the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), the Ontario Bar Association, the Law Society of Ontario, ILCO, Federated Press, the Canadian Tax Foundation and many others. He is a past recipient of the Ontario Bar Association's Hoffstein Book Prize in Trusts and Estates. Active in the executive of STEP at both the Toronto and national levels, Brian is currently the Deputy Chair of STEP Canada and received the Founders Award for outstanding volunteer contribution in 2021. He has been recognized in Chambers High Net Worth Guide, The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory and The Best Lawyers in Canada.
