Brian Kingwell is a partner in Gowling WLG’s Vancouver office, practising in the firm's global Intellectual Property and Life Sciences Groups. His practice focuses on patent prosecution and strategic patent portfolio counselling in the fields of pharmaceuticals, molecular biology, genomics, biochemistry, chemistry, chemical and reservoir engineering, medicine, and medical devices (he himself is the inventor of a patented medical device). Brian’s clients span a range of sectors and industries, including health care, biotechnology, agriculture, and energy. In addition to public speaking engagements on the patent process, he has lectured on patent law at the law schools of the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria. Brian is a registered patent and trademark agent in both the US and Canada and was called to both the British Columbia Bar and Ontario Bar in 1993. He also has a BSc (Biochemistry) and an MSc (Molecular Cell Biology). Brian has been recognized in Managing Intellectual Property: IP Stars, IAM Patent 1000, WIPR Leaders, The Canadian Legal Lexpert®Directory, and The Best Lawyers in Canada, among other publications. In 2018 and again in 2021, he was recognized by Best Lawyers in Canada as Lawyer of the Year for Biotechnology Law – Vancouver.
