Brian Kingwell is a partner in Gowling WLG’s Vancouver office, practising in the firm's global Intellectual Property and Life Sciences groups. His practice focuses on patent prosecution and strategic patent portfolio counselling and due diligence in the fields of pharmaceuticals, molecular biology, genomics, biochemistry, chemistry, chemical and reservoir engineering, medicine and medical devices (he himself is the inventor of a patented medical device). Brian’s clients span a range of sectors and industries, including healthcare, biotechnology, agriculture and cleantech. In addition to public speaking engagements on the patent process, he has lectured on patent law at the law schools of the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria. Brian is a registered patent and trademark agent in both the U.S. and Canada and was called to both the British Columbia and Ontario Bars in 1993. He also has a BSc (Biochemistry) and an MSc (Molecular Cell Biology). Brian has been recognized in Managing Intellectual Property: IP Stars, IAM Patent 1000, WIPR Leaders and The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory among other publications. In 2018, 2021, 2024 and 2026 he received the Best Lawyers in Canada Biotechnology (and Life Sciences Practice) “Lawyer of the Year” award in Vancouver.
