David is the leader of Gowling WLG’s Financial Institutions & Services Industry Group in Canada and co-leads that group globally. With over three decades of experience, he practises in the areas of restructuring and insolvency law and corporate and commercial financing. David has transactional experience in sectors ranging from oil and gas, consumer credit securitization, automotive, hospitality to telecom. Recent matters include: leading the $1.2-billion CCAA filing for Canacol Energy Ltd, leading the $380-million creditor initiated CCAA for Simply Green and Crown Crest, the restructuring of multiple $100-million-plus agricultural product manufacturers and producers, the liquidation and/or restructuring of a number of large domestic Canadian retail chains and the restructuring of a $2.3-billion international mining businesses in Mexico and Canada. David served as Global President then Chair of the Turnaround Management Association (2016-17). He has been recognized in Chambers Global, Chambers Canada, The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, The Best Lawyers in Canada and the Legal 500 Canada. In 2018 he was inducted into the TMA (Global) Hall of Fame and in 2025, he was recognized by ABF Journal with an “Icon” Award.
