Dean is a founder of Carfra Lawton LLP in Victoria. Now associate counsel with the firm, he has preferred areas of practice in insurance law and mediation, with a focus on large loss tort and other liability exposures, coverage, and equitable contribution. His clients include both insured and self-insured individuals, corporations, and government. Dean is a credentialed mediator, having worked with lawyers, their clients, and self-represented parties in successfully resolving hundreds of cases involving personal injury, corporate and commercial disputes, and proceedings against governments and delegated agencies. He is a member of Mediate BC, and the Canadian Academy of Distinguished Neutrals. Dean was president of the Law Society of British Columbia in 2021, and is a Life Bencher. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2016. He has significant experience as a member and chair of hearing panels dealing with lawyer discipline matters. He has an interest in legal education, having been a sessional lecturer in insurance law and civil procedure at the University of Victoria, Faculty of Law, and has been a panel member and guest speaker at numerous industry and legal forums locally and nationally.
