François Baril is a partner in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office. His practice focuses on litigation with an emphasis on health law, including acting as counsel to the Canadian Medical Protective Association. He regularly advises on issues of professional liability, discipline, governance, accreditation, billing, human rights, and ethics. François also practises in the area of competition law. An experienced litigator, he has appeared before a number of courts, including the Supreme Court of Canada, the Federal Court of Appeal, the Tax Court of Canada, all levels of the Ontario Court, the Yukon Court of Appeal, and the Northwest Territories Court of Appeal. He has also appeared before a number of federal and provincial administrative tribunals, coroner’s inquests, and military boards of inquiry. His trial experience includes civil jury and non-jury cases, criminal cases, and private arbitrations. François is a part-time professor at the University of Ottawa where he teaches competition law and lectures on trial advocacy. François practises in both official languages. He was the president of the AJEFO (Association des juristes d’expression française de l’Ontario) from 2014 to 2016.
