John van Gent is entrusted by commercial real estate financiers, investors, and owners to help maximize the value of their portfolios through practical advice on the structuring of complex financing and other transactions. He is recognized in Chambers for his expertise in real estate finance and also in The Legal 500 Canada as one of six next-generation real estate lawyers. John has acted on some of the country's largest commercial real estate financing transactions involving some of Canada’s marquee assets including The Royal York Hotel, Bentall Centre (Vancouver), The St. Regis (formerly Trump Toronto), Scotia Plaza, Bay–Adelaide Centre, The Atrium on Bay, and Aura. John’s Real Estate Finance practice focuses on both syndicated and bilateral secured lending transactions including revolving, term loan, and construction credit facilities. His clients include a mix of borrowers, banks, and private non-bank commercial mortgage lenders. In 2020 the aggregate loan values of lending transactions where John acted for either borrowers or lenders exceeded $3,000,000,000 with an emphasis on revolving credit facilities providing acqusition financing for real estate investment companies and construction credit facilities in connection with condominium developments and industrial warehouses.
