John-Paul is a partner in Mathews Dinsdale’s Toronto office and leads its Education Practice Group. Practising in English and French, he advises school boards and educational institutions on labour, employment, human rights, governance and education law. He has represented clients in more than 1,000 arbitrations and other proceedings before arbitrators, the Ontario Labour Relations Board, human rights tribunals and courts. He has advised nearly every public, Catholic and francophone school board in Ontario, as well as provincial school board associations and independent schools. He is actively involved in central and local collective bargaining under the School Boards Collective Bargaining Act and has acted in province-wide strike and unfair labour practice proceedings. He advises on trustee responsibilities, executive compensation, student issues and complex operational matters. John-Paul teaches Education Law at Queen’s University and has taught labour law and industrial relations at George Brown College and Osgoode Hall Law School. He is co-founder and director of the Canadian Network of Education Human Resource Professionals and serves on the editorial board of the Education & Law Journal. He holds a law degree from the University of Toronto and advanced degrees from Cornell.
