Mat Brechtel is an experienced IP lawyer acting for international brands, technological innovators, and CPG companies. In contentious matters, he has represented clients before the trial and appellate Courts of British Columbia, Ontario, and the Federal Court of Canada, before the TMOB, and in international arbitrations. Mat has enforced IP rights in confidential information, trademarks, copyrights, software, designs, and in contractual disputes surrounding IP. His clients have included RE/MAX, Louis Vuitton, and Blackberry for whom he has obtained pre-judgment remedies, including injunctive relief, asset freezing orders, civil search warrants, and disclosure orders. Mat also acts for IP owners in multi-jurisdiction litigation securing evidence for clients litigating around the world. Mat also assists established businesses and entrepreneurs securing and monetizing IP rights in brands, software, and consumer products. His expertise spans registrations, IP licensing and assignment, and research and development. Mat has particular experience with IP assets online, navigating novel challenges with trademarks, software copyright, streaming, and other emerging platform issues. Mat served as a law clerk at the Supreme Court with Justice Rothstein and the BC Court of Appeal.
