Matthew Sherrard is a partner in Gowling WLG's Business Law Group in Montréal, practising primarily in the areas of Indigenous law and governance. He has particular experience regarding health and social services, justice, public security, and local and regional government, and also provides strategic, practical advice on a variety of commercial matters. Matthew works closely with Indigenous clients on matters including negotiations with provincial and federal governments, nation-to-nation agreements, financial administration, board governance, and legislative drafting. He helps his clients to navigate complex, changing legal landscapes to leverage their rights and achieve their objectives. Matthew also assists Indigenous clients in relation to commercial agreements and government relations matters and has advised extensively on renewable energy projects, including on environmental matters, power purchase and impact and benefit agreements. Matthew has lectured on Indigenous law matters at the University of Windsor. Matthew was called to the Bar in 2007 in Nova Scotia, and in 2008 in Québec and Ontario. He practises law in English and French and speaks Spanish.
