Clients turn to him for meticulous and innovative tax advice. He works with major Canadian, US and other publicly traded companies, PE and hedge funds, as well as tax-exempt institutions on investments, divestments, financings, fund formations, M&A, reorganizations and real estate and resource projects. Michael provides counsel on disputes with tax authorities and has particular expertise in international tax issues, including foreign affiliate, tax treaty and transfer pricing matters. He also advises high-net worth individuals and their family offices on estate planning, personal trusts, and immigration and emigration matters. A frequent speaker at tax conferences, Michael publishes extensively in a variety of tax periodicals. He is a councilor and president of the Canadian Branch of the International Fiscal Association. On February 22, 2019, CDP Financial Inc. (“CDP Financial”), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (“CDPQ”), launched a Senior Note Program for the issue and sale of up to an aggregate principal amount of US$20 billion of senior notes (the “Program”), to be unconditionally and irrevocably guaranteed by CDPQ. On March 6, 2019, CDP Financial completed an initial offering of US$2 billion aggregate principal amount of senior notes due 2022 under the Program (the “Offering”), with Goldman Sachs International, BNP Paribas, HSBC Bank plc and TD Securities (USA) LLC acting as agents for the Offering.
