Michael practises exclusively in the areas of pensions and employee benefits law. He provides private and public sector clients, including boards of trustees, with strategic advice and practical counsel about legal, legislative and regulatory issues, both provincial and federal, surrounding retirement plans, employee benefits and related human resource matters. In business transactions, Michael advises clients on the pension and benefit implications. In addition to providing support on pension and benefit litigation, he advises clients on plan governance and administration issues, and assists them with related plan, trust and service provider documentation. Michael is highly experienced in the legal aspects of governing, administering and documenting group benefit plans, including non-pension post-retirement benefit plans. He is a member of the Legal Consultative Committee for Alberta Treasury Board and Finance, Chair of the Alberta Regional Council of the Association of Canadian Pension Management, and is a Past Chair of the Canadian Bar Association’s National Pensions and Benefits Law Section. He is recognized by Chambers Canada for pensions and benefits and in The Best Lawyers in Canada for employee benefits law.
