Mike Richmond is the national leader of McMillan LLP’s Energy Group. His practice focuses on the development, construction, acquisition, financing and operation of power generation and storage facilities. He has extensive experience advising plant owners, operators and lenders, while also advising major power consumers on their energy strategies with a focus on energy storage, self-generation and retail energy purchases. Having played a leading role in the development of over 600 solar, wind, gas, geothermal and battery projects, Mike provides guidance on power purchase agreements, electricity wholesale and retail contracts, project acquisitions and operations, site leases, EPC contracts, connection processes, regulatory licences and approvals, market rule compliance, financings and dispositions. His previous roles as Senior Policy Advisor to the Minister of Energy, counsel to a Parliamentary caucus, Corporate Director of Toronto Hydro and Member of the National Energy Board have given him unique insight into the perspectives of regulators, governments, utilities and shareholders. This combination of energy law expertise and deep regulatory and public policy background has been a proven benefit in advancing his clients’ interests through both contractual and political means.
