Robert Sheahan is a partner and head of the Advocacy Department in Gowling WLG’s Ottawa office. Certified by the Law Society of Ontario as a Specialist in Health Law, Robert practises health law and solicitors’ negligence and acts as General Counsel to the Canadian Medical Protection Association. He has appeared before the Ontario Provincial Court, Superior Court of Justice, Court of Appeal, as well as health professions boards and commercial tribunals. He has been recognized in Chambers Canada, The Canadian Legal Lexpert® Directory, and The Best Lawyers in Canada. In 2017 and again in 2020, Robert was recognized by Best LawyersCanada as Lawyer of the Year for Health Care Law — Ottawa. He is an instructor at the Osgoode Hall LLM Health Law Program and has been a guest lecturer at the University of Ottawa Faculties of Law and Medicine. He also presents before groups including the American and International Bar Associations and the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. In addition to being an editor of the Electronic Healthcare Law Review (LexisNexis Canada), Robert has authored numerous papers on topics ranging from privacy considerations and personal health-care records to limiting non-pecuniary damages.
