Rod Northey MA, LLM, is a partner in the Toronto office of Gowling WLG and past head of the firm’s Environmental Law Practice Group. Called to the Ontario Bar in 1990, the Nunavut Bar in 2021, and certified by the Law Society of Ontario as a Specialist in Environmental Law, Rod’s practice focuses on regulatory approvals and strategies across the full range of approval regimes involving the environment. Since 1994, Rod has been author of five books on federal environmental assessment, including A Guide to Canada’s Impact Assessment Act (forthcoming 2023, LexisNexis Canada). As a litigator, Rod has been involved in dozens of tribunal and court appeals, including more than 50 reported environmental law decisions. The federal and Ontario governments have each appointed Rod to recent expert panels on environmental assessment. Rod has also assisted municipalities and First Nations with drafting innovative laws and bylaws. Rod is an adjunct faculty member at Osgoode Hall Law School's Energy and Infrastructure Law LLM program for its course on environmental protection. He has been recognized in Chambers Canada, Who’s Who Legal: Environment, The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, The Best Lawyers in Canada and the Legal 500 Canada.
