Scott A. Smith is a partner in Gowling WLG’s Vancouver office. He has a leading national practice at the confluence of environmental, energy, regulatory, natural resource, and Indigenous law. He has a track record of successfully advising clients in high-profile, complex regulatory hearings and related litigation for major natural resource and energy projects across Canada. Scott has extensive experience in negotiating and structuring Indigenous equity ownership of major projects and regularly advises clients on the Crown’s duty to consult and accommodate Indigenous peoples. Scott has assisted Indigenous peoples with respect to all phases of resource development and infrastructure projects in their territories, including mining, oil & gas pipelines, LNG, forestry, hydroelectric, wind, solar, and transmission line projects. He is a highly skilled negotiator who has negotiated precedent-setting government-to-government agreements, as well as impact benefit agreements between Indigenous peoples and companies. Scott also has a thriving litigation and regulatory practice. In 2018, Scott was named one of Lexpert's Rising Stars: Leading Lawyers Under 40 and was included on Benchmark Litigation's40 & Under Hot List from 2017 to 2020. He has also been recognized in The Legal 500 Canada.
