TD Banking has appointed former Laurentian Bank chief legal officer Bindu Cudjoe as its general counsel, Canadian banking.
Cudjoe commenced in the new role this month. In this capacity, she will lead and guide the company’s Canadian personal and commercial banking businesses.
She has held leadership roles in the financial sector and is an expert in banking law, particularly personal, commercial, and corporate lending. She has also tackled issues related to governance, regulatory compliance, litigation, and risk management.
In addition to being chief legal officer, Cudjoe was executive vice president, chief inclusion and equity officer, and corporate secretary at Laurentian Bank. During her time with the bank, she supervised its legal, regulatory compliance, ethics and EDI functions; she also handled matters involving corporate governance and reputational risks.
She advised business partners as well as Laurentian Bank’s board and key stakeholders on delivering the bank’s strategic plan. She went on to become a principal and strategic advisor at Bindustries Consulting.
Cudjoe also logged a stint at Canadian Western Bank as senior vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary. In this role, she led the legal compliance and investigations group.
Moreover, she was vice president, deputy general counsel - technology and operations legal, and chief knowledge officer at BMO Financial Group; at one point, she was its chief administrative officer according to LinkedIn.
Cudjoe once taught business associations as an adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School. She was once a partner at McMillan LLP and an associate at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP.
She founded the Women General Counsel Canada's General Counsel University and sits on the global board of the Association of Corporate Counsel as a director. She is also National GC Network director.
Cudjoe sits on the editorial board of Canadian Lawyer. Last year, she encouraged in-house lawyers to participate in business meetings in an episode of the CL Talk podcast. In 2024 she was awarded the Lawson Lundell LLP Award for Law Department Leader of the Year and in 2016 she was recognized as one of Canadian Lawyer's Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers.
