Alberta legal regulator welcomes Sarah Klein as general counsel

The Law Society of Alberta has welcomed as its new general counsel Sarah Klein, former Dentons Canada deputy general counsel.

She stepped into the role on September 2. In this role, Klein will contribute to initiatives like the Innovation Sandbox; she will also oversee litigation management, organizational risk management activities, and privacy matters with the Tribunal Counsel.

While at Dentons, Klein worked with the leadership team on risk management issues and advised lawyers on ethics, practice, and claims matters. She was also the firm’s learning director, where she launched a national harmonized education program for law students and associates.

Moreover, she launched leadership development initiatives for high-potential associates and new partners. She also served as the firm’s privacy and risk operations (Office of the General Counsel) director in Canada from May 2020 to April 2025, according to LinkedIn.

While working in private practice, Klein was an associate with Macleod Dixon LLP (now Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP), where she worked with the banking and finance and energy groups. She also clerked for Marina Paperny at the Alberta Court of Appeal and was called to the Alberta bar in 2008.

She serves on the Alberta Law Libraries board, which she chaired recently. The provincial law library network caters to the judiciary, members of the bar, Crown prosecutors, and justice department staff.

Klein joins an executive leadership team led by chief executive officer and executive director Elizabeth J. Osler. The team includes Cori Ghitter (deputy executive director and director of policy and education), chief financial officer Nadine Meade, regulation and professionalism director Kendall Moholitny, Andrew Norton (chief information officer and business operations director), human resources director Brita Wahl, and David Weyant (Alberta Lawyers Indemnity Association president and CEO).

The Law Society of Alberta recently inked a five-year governance agreement for legal aid services with Legal Aid Alberta and the provincial government.
