Former JPMorgan senior vice president Mike Coyne moves to Manulife as general counsel

International financial services provider Manulife Financial Corporation has hired as general counsel Mike Coyne, former JPMorgan Chase & Co. senior vice president, associate general counsel, and global litigation co-head.

Coyne commences in the role on September 1 under the supervision of Manulife president and CEO Phil Witherington. He will also be part of the executive leadership team.

Coyne was with JPMorgan for over two decades. He was most recently senior fellow and litigation strategy advisor at non-partisan advocacy and policy think tank Bank Policy Institute.

He was also the general counsel and senior legal officer – Americas at Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group. Moreover, he was an executive officer at MUFG in Tokyo and at MUFG Bank Ltd., MUFG’s commercial bank subsidiary.

Coyne holds degrees from Boston College Law School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“Mike brings demonstrated ability to lead high-performing legal teams, navigate complexity, leverage transformative technology to optimize ways of working, and advise boards and executive leadership with strategic clarity and sound judgment,” Witherington said in a statement. “His global perspective and passion for building an inclusive culture, as well as sponsoring, developing, and coaching colleagues, will be invaluable as we write Manulife's next chapter.”

Coyne replaces Jim Gallagher, who retires this month. Gallagher was appointed to the position in 2012; over his tenure, he managed the global law, compliance, government relations, and corporate secretary functions.
