Legal ops is shifting to AI and data analytics: Corporate Legal Operations Consortium president

The 2025 Corporate Legal Operations Consortium (CLOC) Global Institute, an annual event for legal operations professionals and teams, takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada this week and features the theme of opening new doors.

Through the event from May 5–8, CLOC aims to help its members lead real change with creativity, discover new ways of achieving results, and shift toward a phase of innovation, collaboration, strategic thinking, and smart execution, according to Jennifer McCarron, CLOC president.

McCarron shared that the event’s speakers include Oyango Snell, CLOC’s executive director; Nancy Rademaker, futurist and international keynote speaker; and Irene Liu. Liu is an advisor to the California state senate and an AI Institute advisor and executive in residence at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, according to Liu’s LinkedIn page.

In a blog post, McCarron said the event’s speakers will seek to help shape the future of legal operations professionals. McCarron urged members to try new tools and approaches with creativity, which will open ways to lead, grow, and change.

“The doors are open,” McCarron said in the blog post. “Walk through them. Take the lead.”

Trend in legal operations

McCarron noted in the blog post that legal operations are swiftly moving toward data analytics, vendor management, and AI, with AI adoption doubling this past year. CLOC’s most recent report on the state of the legal operations industry revealed that 93 percent of respondents believe their roles are growing.

McCarron emphasized the importance of soft skills in the blog post. McCarron explained that legal operations professionals need to:

  • guide their teams through technological rollouts and process changes with clear direction
  • transform complex data into engaging stories that inspire executive buy-in and team alignment
  • foster trust with emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and empathy
  • encourage collaboration among legal, finance, procurement, and IT teams to break down silos
  • use critical thinking and creative problem-solving to respond swiftly to evolving market demand

McCarron said these skills are in line with strategic planning, technology, and organization optimization and health, which are items in the CLOC Core 12, a framework seeking to evaluate the maturity of legal operations.

The framework also includes business intelligence, financial management, firm and vendor management, information governance, knowledge management, practice operations, project/program management, service delivery models, and training and development.

CLOC is a peer-driven and not-for-profit community that brings together legal operations professionals, service providers, and stakeholders.
