Placer Dome Acquires Gold Mine

Placer Dome Inc. and its wholly owned subsidiary, Placer Dome Asia Pacific Limited, acquired all the issued and outstanding shares of Australian-based East African Gold Mines Ltd. (EAGM). The deal closed on July 23, 2003. The total cash purchase price was approximately US$252.4 million.

Placer Dome’s legal team was led by Geoff Gold, vice-president, assistant secretary and associate general counsel, and included Kristen Riddell and Trevor Thomas, legal counsel; and assisted in Canada by Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, with a team led by Eden Oliver and including Ed Vandenberg and Ali Kermalli; in Australia by Allens Arthur Robinson, with a team led by Kevin McCann and including Paul Miller, Nicholas Adkins and Richard Kriedemann in Sydney; and in Tanzania by Maajar Rwechungura Nguluma & Makani (Advocates) (Dar es Salaam), with a team led by Mwanaidi Maajar and including Charles Rwechungura, Alex Nguluma, Vicky Makani and Tabitha Maro. The selling shareholders of EAGM were represented by Mallesons Stephen Jaques in Sydney, with a team led by Michael Herring and including Paula Jellett.
